IOGP Published Formats Update

IOGP Releases Version 1.1 of its P1 and P2 Geophysical Position Data Exchange Format

Dear Members & Guests,

The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) has released version 1.1 of its P1 and P2 geophysical position data exchange formats. Originally released in 2012 to replace the UKOOA P1/90 and P2/94 formats, the revised versions incorporate industry feedback from the first release and provide greater flexibility – without changing the fundamental format structure. For example, the format now enables the recording of land and OBC formats and additional peripheral sensor or QC data.

The OGP P1/11 v1.1, OGP P2/11 v1.1 formats are available at:

The formats incorporate learnings from the first two years of implementation and include enhancements requested by the industry, such as: handling channel grouping; ‘virtual’ position objects such as mid-points; global pre-plot attributes; event-based attributes; receiver and source relation records

IOGP is revising the original user guide. It is expected to be published during Q3 2015.

APSG Central Chapter Spring Meeting 2015

Dear Members & Guests,

US Central Chapter Spring meeting is almost here and we are getting ready for the event. The meeting will be held on April 7, 2015 a day before the ESRI PUG meeting. The location will be at BP, Westlake Park Blvd Complex in Houston.

The theme for our meeting is "Advances in Geo Spatial Technologies - Whats New?" Several members have requested presentations on how the new disruptive technologies ie UAV/ LIDAR etc. are impacting the Geo Spatial applications and we are inviting interested members and guests to submit a short abstract for presentation at the upcoming Spring meeting. These are just few suggested topics but you are welcome to submit papers with other related technologies applicable to Oil and Gas industry. Other topics can be GLONASS , Mobile applications, Data management, etc. Case studies will be preferred. Vendors are welcome to submit abstracts as long as the papers are jointly presented by a user. Please send abstracts to me at the email address shown below. Deadline to submit abstracts is March 7, 2015

On behalf of the APSG Committee we would like to inform you of the passing of our Dear Friend and Colleague Jerry Hubbard

Dear APSG Family,

Jerry Hubbard, President of Energistics, who was a great supporter of our efforts and instrumental in getting OMG associated with the work of the Standards Leadership Council, which he founded and co-chaired, suddenly died at home on January 1, 2015. He had been recovering from cancer surgery and some as-yet unspecified complication is suspected -- although no details are available.

Those who knew him will remember his dedication, experience, intelligence, leadership and humor. He did great things to organize the O&G standards community and create a vision for convergent efforts. Please have a thought for his family at this difficult time.

Jerry was a key contact for us, and a person who could enable our moving our message out amongst standards organizations – Jerry’s leading the Standards Leadership Council has taken standards correlation and coordination to a new level since its inception… "

Abstract:
There is a remarkable resurgence underway in the use of geochemical surveys in the marine petroleum exploration industry. This resurgence has been driven by a confluence of: advances in and application of acoustic survey technology; the advent of the “digital bubble”; and market drivers that are pushing for smarter and less expensive exploration decisions in deep water. Applications of related sonar technology are also now being used for engineering and environmental monitoring of deepwater facilities and seabed conditions at developed fields.

For almost 15 years, a few scientists have been helping innovative, early-adopter, oil companies use seafloor seep detection and precision sampling techniques to find and take geochemical samples at seeps to improve their exploration success. Now, multibeam echosounder (MBES) technology developed by the defense industry is rapidly being adopted to greatly improve the reliability and utility of these smart geochemical surveys.

A recent step-change improvement in MBES technology is the vastly enhanced ability to image streams of gas bubbles in the water column, and hence improve seafloor seep detection. Echosounder technology had always been able to image gas bubbles, but as the data moved from paper records to digital processing and interpretation, choices made to address data processing and storage limitations resulted in data reductions that no longer included water column data. The new multibeam technology and processing choices have reintroduced water column bubble detection (WCBD), now in the form of a “digital bubble”, to the interpreter’s toolbox.

Today, market forces are driving the need to reduce costs for deep water exploration. Exploration teams are realizing that smart geochemical surveys can help guide where to shoot expensive 3D surveys. Others are taking the bubble-detection ability further and want to use remotely-operated vehicles and robot submarines to directly sample and analyze the natural seeps.

The inexpensive bubble-detection technology is now also being used to help: define baseline environmental conditions before field development commences; monitor deepwater developments for gas leaks in infrastructure; and identify and characterize induced leaks and other changes in seafloor conditions resulting from production activities. Improved application of this technology will be part of operators’ regular production field monitoring, maintenance, and environmental stewardship programs going forward.

BIO:
Dan McConnell began his geoscience career with Scott-Pickford, a British geoscience consulting group. He began to focus on marine geology and geophysics when he joined Fugro-McClelland Marine Geosciences in Houston in 1997. There, he interpreted offshore 3D seismic data, high-resolution survey, geochemical, and geotechnical data in support of offshore engineering and drilling operations. Dan left Fugro in 2003 to start a Houston-based geohazard consulting group at AOA Geophysics, which would augment their seafloor mapping and seep survey business. Dan returned to Fugro in 2011 when AOA Geophysics was acquired and integrated with Fugro’s offshore consulting group. For a brief time, Dan managed Fugro’s Houston-based offshore consulting business. He now works on aligning and integrating Fugro’s service offerings across the Americas.

Dan has written numerous articles about deepwater site conditions. His main contribution has been the identification and quantification of gas hydrate deposits from seismic data that culminated with the landmark Chevron- US Department of Energy drilling expedition in the Gulf of Mexico in 2009. Dan holds two degrees, History and Geology, from the University of Texas at Austin.

Future U.S. Datums

PRESENTED BY: Denis Riordan, NOAA/National Geodetic Survey (NGS).

The official geometric datum (horizontal) for the United States is the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83). This national datum has had three major updates since it was first published, with the last one being the NAD83 (2011) national adjustment. The official U.S. vertical datum is the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) and is referenced through bench marks that are subject to change over time. This network of passive control has associated inaccuracies, and is deteriorating daily through various types of construction, crustal movement, lack of re-observations, etc. The National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is currently working to define and adopt a geocentric reference datum for the United States to replace NAD 83. At the same time, NGS is working to compute an accurate geoid model which will serve as the defining surface of a new vertical datum that will be accessed through GNSS technology. Access to orthometric heights will be determined through future high accuracy geoid models, replacing NAVD 88 as the defining vertical datum. These two changes are dependent upon one another in a variety of ways and are currently planned to occur simultaneously.

This presentation will provide a brief history of datums for the U.S., discuss why we need more modern datums, and how NGS is working to develop these new national datums. As time allows, information will be provided on two other NGS products, the Online Positioning User Service (OPUS) with emphasis on OPUS Projects and the control mark search program, DSWorld.

Nightmare on GIS Street: Accuracy, Datums, and Geospatial Data

I'm not a trained geodesist. I'm not a mathematician. I know enough to be dangerous, and enough to know this subject is going to be a nightmare for people managing geospatial databases. The only reason it’s not a nightmare today is because most of you don't know it’s even a problem. Or, you know it’s a problem, but let it slide because dealing with it is not easy. It’s going to get worse in the future, much worse. It’s going to get worse because sensors (GPS, GNSS, imagery, etc.) are getting much more accurate. The cost of acquiring high-precision (centimeter-level) data, whether it’s via GNSS, scanning or?? is falling hard and fast. High-precision GNSS receivers are getting much cheaper. Geodata 2.0 is coming, and it is making existing geospatial databases look like my kids’ coloring books. Join me in a discussion about GNSS, horizontal datums, and geospatial data.

North American Horizontal Datums

This talk concerns the evolution of the North American Datum from inception to NAD83(2011) epoch 2010 and on to the planned movement away from NAD to a New Geometric Datum (NGD) to support improved GNSS positioning . The NGS 10-Year plan states "NGS [will redefine] the national horizontal datum to remove gross disagreements with the ITRF"

GIS Skills Shortage - So What Are You Doing About it?

The Worldwide GIS Industry is anticipated to grow from US $4.4 billion in 2010 to US$ 10.6 billion by 2015 driven by growth of Tablets and Smart phones with built in GPS, increased awareness and various compliance requirements. To find new employees, most of the companies no longer offer apprentice/intern programs due to cost and time constraints. Companies are looking for "just in time employees -trained and ready to go". They want fully trained workers but want some others to train them.

Due to various reasons, colleges and educators are not offering proper curriculum/ courses to future GIS graduates. How often has a educator contacted a business person to see how their curriculum fits their needs? How often has a business person contacted a college to offer any advice? There is very little communication between colleges and potential employers. To put it bluntly "before you build a better mouse trap make sure you have mice around. Here we are producing graduates but do we know if they have the right skills or employable?

The presentation will offer suggestions we all can use to improve the upcoming shortage of "Qualified GIS professionals".

Stories from the Data Wars

From about the year 1939 AD through time came the Ships (short for shipments) loaded with more and more bits and bytes of data in boxes (tapes, all sorts of disks, USB sticks, hard drives, Bernoulli, ROM, the list is long). The people who had to manage this data came to be known as the “data management people”. They wore funny glasses so that they could see the Lines and rows of characters and numbers on the dark screens. They grew gnarly over time and more cantankerous, as they became virtual curmudgeons, sticklers for accuracy and quality against a world full of defective inaccurate bytes of data. It became a virtual war to be fought through future times by many brave men and women who call themselves soldiers in these data wars. On “The Streets of Fire”, they call them the “data wranglers”. There is more to the story…lots more.

Case Study of Integrating the Area of Use Polygons from the EPSG Geodetic Parameter Dataset

Going from theory to practice always presents unique challenges. As Blue Marble implemented functionality around the EPSG Dataset’s Area of Use Polygons into the Geographic Calculator, some fairly unique challenges arose in the process. What can be described in fairly simple terms as “limiting choices of coordinate systems and transformations based on geography” turns out to be a fairly complex problem when thousands of polygons and millions of data points enter the mix. Issues such as data formatting, geography based searching, and processing speed all appeared in this unique development that required a bridge between simple database lookup, and true geospatial analysis. This talk will explore both the challenges as well as some of the solutions that were arrived upon.

APSG Canada Chapter Spring 2014 Meeting

Dear Members,

The Association of Petroleum Surveying & Geomatics Canada Chapter is pleased to announce a Call for Papers for our Spring Meeting on April 3, 2014.

This is a Call for Papers to present during the meeting, which is open until March 14, 2014. We are currently planning for a Full Day event. There will be two themes at this event this year.

Due to the success of the presentations about Oil & Gas Web Map Development at our last meeting, we are asking for more companies to demonstrate their applications to the membership. Please submit a note to Dean Mikkelsen (dcmikkelsen@gmail.com) if you are interested in making a presentation.

In the afternoon, we are looking at discussing an issue of importance to our members here in Calgary: NAD27/NAD83 Conversions and how we handle them from a software perspective, mapping, geology and geophysics, acquisition, pipelines, and what various organizations are doing to accommodate either datum or both datums. We would like to hear from Operators, Pipeline, Service and Government and Regulatory agencies about NAD27/NAD83 and to share your learning and experiences. Again, please submit a note to Dean Mikkelsen (dcmikkelsen@gmail.com) if you are interested in making a presentation about this topic.

As with all events we will also be looking for sponsors for the Lunch and Social afterwards. If you are interested please contact Dean Mikkelsen (dcmikkelsen@gmail.com).

If there are more members interested in joining the leadership committee and helping to build the APSG here in Calgary, please feel free to contact Dean Mikkelsen (dcmikkelsen@gmail.com). The APSG is pleased to announce the details for the Spring 2014 Meeting. The APSG31
US Central Chapter Spring Meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 22 from 8:30am to 4:30pm immediately followed by a social. We intentionally scheduled the meeting prior to the ESRI PUG Conference being held that same week in Houston so that members can plan to attend both events. The meeting will be hosted at the Hess Conference Center, 1501 McKinney Street, Houston Texas 77010, 4th Floor, rooms 4C and 4D.

The theme of this meeting is “Geospatial Data Nightmares - How to deal with Datum & Accuracy Issues”. Dennis Riordan from the NGS will be the keynote speaker and will be providing an update on the new horizontal datum the NGS is implementing. We are looking for 3-4 additional speakers who are passionate about all things Geospatial to deliver presentations on datum and accuracy issues as it relates to the petroleum industry.

The Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 is now available.

Please see the news release sent out by Natural Resources Canada in regards to the new Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 being released:

The Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 (CGVD2013) is now available!

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is pleased to announce the release of the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 (CGVD2013), which is now the reference standard for heights across Canada. This new height reference system replaces the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1928 (CGVD28).

The chosen reference height of CGVD2013 derives from collaborative work and is formalized in an agreement between Geodetic organizations in United States of America and Canada. The vertical datum is now compatible with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as GPS.

The height of benchmarks is also now available in CGVD2013. These heights come from a readjustment of the entire existing federal first-order levelling network. Please note that the age of the benchmarks and the impact of regional instability since they were last observed may render them unreliable.Â Re-observation is always recommended for critical applications requiring utmost accuracy.

NRCan is maintaining the publication of heights at benchmarks in CGVD28 for those who prefer to continue using the old reference and to assure a smooth and gradual transition period to the new height reference system.

On behalf of the APSG Committee we would like to relay further details in regards to the sudden passing of our Dear Friend and Colleague Jim Cain.

Dear APSG Family,

Jim Cain was a man of legendary integrity, good humor, and reliability. We all feel an emptiness and he will be greatly missed. His obituary will be published in the Houston Chronicle on Monday, December 2^nd, and Tuesday, December 3^rd.

Visitation will be at Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Drive, Houston, on Tuesday December 3^rd, from 6pm to 8 pm. The Funeral is Wednesday, December 4^th at 10am at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 15015 Memorial Drive, Houston. The Right Reverend C. Andrew Doyle, Bishop of Texas will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Texas A&M Alumni Association.

In Remembrance of Jim Cain	November 30, 2013

On behalf of the APSG Committee we would like to relay some sad news from Michael Barnes, Dear Friend and Business Partner of Jim Cain.

Dear APSG Family,

The Cain Family has asked me to communicate the very sad news that Jim Cain died today, Saturday 30^th of November, at 5 pm. He was a man of legendary integrity, good humor, and reliability. Jim was 70 years young while intellectually and physically still very active. We will all miss Jim Cain enormously.

He died of cardiac arrest with no prior indication of serious illness. In fact, we spoke at noon today and he was in great spirits and looking forward to his next business trip to Europe.

Liz and Jim had just returned from family Thanksgiving in Wyoming and he was preparing to travel to Rijswijk (OGP geodesy subcommittee) and London (PetroSkills geomatics class).

Personally, I am in shock by the loss of my close friend of many years and business partner of ten years. I know that all receiving this message will feel the same emptiness.

Please feel free to write a note of condolence to Liz Cain at 12418 Stafford Springs Drive, Houston TX 77077-3910, USA.

Details of his funeral will be communicated when available.

The Theme is "Examples of Oil & Gas Web Map Development". There is one spot left for registration - once the spot is filled the registration link will be disabled. Web mapping is a very interesting topic and almost everyone in our industry does or may benefit from it. We will review different kinds of implementations and the various business needs that resulted in the development. We can also expect to see a variety of technologies used. Those experienced in this area will recognize and benefit by comparing to the work others have done, and those not experienced will see a way forward to exploit this exciting technology.

We still have an open position for the Chair. The Chair is responsible for delegating any/all tasks to members of the Leadership Committee. Dear Members & Guests,

Our US Central Chapter fall meeting is almost here and I want to let you know that the meeting agenda is now posted on the web site for your perusal. In addition we’ve put the abstracts for each of the presentations online so you can get a feel for the focus and content of each talk that you will be hearing. You will see that we indeed have a great line up of presentations that should promote some interesting discussion during the Q&A times and across the coffee breaks, lunch, and the after-meeting social.

If you’ve missed the earlier messages the theme of this meeting is “The Future of Geomatics in the Petroleum Industry” and it is being held on Wednesday, September 25, at Anadarko Petroleum in The Woodlands. If you have not yet registered for this event then please do so right away. If you have already registered may I encourage you to reach out to a few friends and colleagues and invite one or more of them to come to the meeting with you? This promises to be a great meeting and they’ll be glad they agreed to come and appreciative that you asked and encouraged!

One additional note of interest to everyone. In light of the recent numeric growth and geographic expansion of the APSG the organizational hierarchy of the APSG is being re-examined by STAC. Please read their proposed recommendations here. These recommendations will be explained and time provided for discussion during the meeting so please take a few minutes to look them over and, if desired, be prepared to discuss your thoughts and suggestions at the fall meeting. Keep in mind these are only proposed recommendations at this time. If you will not be able to attend the fall meeting your comments are still valued and appreciated and may be emailed to the APSG Webmaster (apsgwebmaster@gmail.com) for distribution to STAC. We appreciate your input!

Still trying to decide whether or not to attend the meeting? Go to the APSG website and check out the agenda and abstracts, and then make the right move and sign up to attend. We want to be sure we have enough snacks and lunch for everyone, so your timely registration will really help us there. You will see from the agenda that we’ll also be making every effort to have the meeting wrapped up around 4 pm so we can all enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Woodlands Waterway to Goose’s Acre for a fun hour or two of networking and relaxing before heading home for the evening. You won’t want to miss out.

Meet the West Chapter Leadership

CHAIR - Natalie Cutsforth with Idea + Astadia


Natalie has 18 years of experience in the Geographic Information Systems   industry.    Her technology expertise ranges from software to data requirements, with a vision for application   of geospatial technologies for oil and gas, commercial and government clients. Based in Denver, Colorado she manages relationships with a diverse set of clients for Astadia (Idea Integration). Natalie began her career in the data side of mapping technology with satellite remote sensing and aerial photography. Then added an understanding of GIS software for creating and managing spatial data while working for ESRI. Natalie served on the Board of Directors for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Geographic Information Technology Association (GITA) from 2008-2010, as president in 2009. She has participated on the Denver Petroleum User Group (DPUG), Microsoft's Upstream Reference Architecture partner group and   actively participates in the information technology community in both Denver and Houston. In addition, she has published several technology articles in Imaging Notes magazine.

VICE CHAIR-John Farrell with Fidelity Exploration & Production Co.

John Farrell, GISP has worked as a software engineer for Lockheed Martin, Computer Sciences Corporation, IHS, and PetroWEB. For the past 18 years he has developed GIS Applications for the Oil and Gas Industry and is currently managing the GIS and GPS operations for Fidelity Exploration & Production Co. in Denver. In addition to being the Vice Chair for the West Chapter of the APSG, John is currently the chairman of the Denver Petroleum User Group (DPUG), and an active AAPG Member. John's educational achievements include: B.S. in Geological Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, and Masters in Computer Information Systems from the University of Denver.

SECRETARY - TREASURER - Delmar "Andy" Anderson with Del Consulting
          Dr. Anderson, an Independent Consultant, Del Consulting, provides expertise in remote sensing applications. As such, Dr. Anderson has provided consulting services in remote sensing to the Intelligence Community and U.S. corporations to include: Exploitation of Ikonos satellite imagery for Space Imaging/GeoEye; Imagery product conceptualization for Raytheon; GIS needs assessment for the Massachusetts Highway Department; and Imagery analysis pilot studies for Wal-Mart and Flying J (truck plazas). He worked in the intelligence field for forty years…including tactical and strategic intelligence collection and production of assessments for policy and decision makers.   He served in numerous assignments domestically and internationally. As a USAF officer, he held positions in the Air Force Intelligence Agency, the 1381st Geodetic Squadron, the U.S. Military Assistance Command, and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Overseas tours were mainly in the Pacific Rim. Policy issues included energy security, food security, water security, and other non-military issues…along with concerns relevant to political and military implications for U.S. security. Dr. Anderson’s educational achievement in geography include: BS, Kansas State University; MS, Northwestern University, and Ph.D., the University of Kansas.

Bill Emison currently serves as a Senior Account Manager and MARS^® Product Manager for the GeoSpatial Solutions division of Merrick & Company, a professional engineering services firm based in Greenwood Village, Colorado. In this position, Bill is responsible for the sales and marketing efforts to the commercial markets, including oil and gas, utilities, and related infrastructure organizations. Bill earned an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Louisville (Kentucky) and a Master’s degree in GIS (City Planning) from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. He has been involved in the geospatial industry since 1993.

Dear Members & Guests,

As many of you know our fall meeting is coming up in just three weeks. I know many of you are wrapping up those summer activities, the kids are now back in school, and you’re finally settling down to set your fall event schedule. So, with that in mind I want to encourage you to go the APSG web site TODAY and register for the our APSG30 US Central Chapter Fall Meeting, being held on Wednesday, September 25, at Anadarko Petroleum in The Woodlands.

The theme of this meeting is “The Future of Geomatics in the Petroleum Industry” and to that end we have a great set of talks lined up that I think will catch your interest and really stir some conversation among our membership. We also want to take this opportunity to briefly share what is going on with the various APSG chapters and the new APSG organizational hierarchy being discussed and developed for official approval by member vote early next year. This will be a significant organizational change so we’ve even included time for some Q&A.

Whether you are a new, recent, or veteran member of APSG I encourage you to come on up to The Woodlands for a great day of learning, discussion, networking, and fun. To top it off the venue is beautiful, the parking is FREE, and the light breakfast, snacks, drinks, and lunch during the meeting are all part of your $35 annual membership fee that you’ve already paid (or will pay upon arrival at the meeting). Of course the meeting will also be followed by a nice vendor-sponsored social at the Goose’s Acre, a very short and pleasant walk down the waterway from the Anadarko Tower (so you can remain conveniently parked in the Anadarko garage).

We know the meeting lands during the SEG convention and sure apologize if that will keep you away this time, but hope you may be able to break away from the convention for part of that day or perhaps the entire day to join us in The Woodlands. I really think it will be worth your time and effort!

In case you are wondering, the official meeting agenda will be posted on the website within the next few days so you can check out the presentations and the schedule for the day and can plan your attendance accordingly. In the meantime go ahead and register and start making plans to join us on September 25. I’m anticipating a great and intriguing meeting and look forward to sharing the day with you!

Our annual Houston chapter APSG fall meeting is just around the corner and we are coming up on the deadline for you to submit a presentation title and abstract for that great talk you would like to deliver to your APSG friends, peers, and colleagues. Our fall meeting, titled "The Future of Geomatics in the Petroleum Industry", will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at the Anadarko Petroleum Tower in The Woodlands. The goal of this meeting is to discuss the latest geomatics technologies and disciplines and the growing capabilities and potential of geomatics to further advance and insure success across the entire oil and gas industry.

Dear Members & Guests,

With the fall meeting coming up soon it’s time to start thinking about the annual changing of the guard. Jackie Portsmouth will be moving up at the fall meeting from Vice Chair to APSG Chair and we will elect a new Vice Chair at that time. This is your opportunity to nominate worthy individuals that the Nominations Committee should consider and advance as the top two candidates for us all to vote on at the meeting.

The Vice Chair serves for one year and is elected by majority vote of the APSG membership present at the fall meeting. At the end of the one-year term the Vice Chair automatically advances to the position of APSG Chair as prescribed by the APSG Articles of Association.

Candidates for Vice Chair should:

Be active members of the US Central Chapter
Have a proven track record in professional, industry, or community leadership
Have employer support
Be committed to two contiguous years of dedicated service, first year as Vice Chair followed by second year as Chair

All candidate suggestions should be submitted to Jim Cain, at jim.cain@cain-barnes.com, by August 21 to provide time for the committee to evaluate the submissions and narrow the list down to two candidates. Please provide the nominee’s name and contact information. The two finalist candidates will be announced via email and at the APSG website prior to the meeting and a vote will then take place at the fall meeting.

Dear Members & Guests,

Though we’re still deep in the hot, dog days of summer, fall is coming and that means our annual APSG fall meeting is just around the corner! At the last meeting we looked at our geodetic roots and how they led to and influenced our current geodetic reality. Now it’s time to look ahead and discuss the latest geomatics technologies and disciplines and the growing capabilities and potential of geomatics to further advance and insure success across the entire oil and gas industry.

Our fall meeting, titled “The Future of Geomatics in the Petroleum Industry”, will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at Anadarko Petroleum in The Woodlands. We intentionally staged this meeting during the SEG convention in hope that many of our out-of-town members will be in Houston for the show and can break away for one day to attend this APSG fall meeting.

In preparation for a great meeting we are looking for six or seven speakers with a passion for geomatics and an exciting, noteworthy presentation to deliver on any of the following topics as they relate to the petroleum industry:

The role of geomatics in the oil & gas industry from exploration to exploitation to distribution

New and innovative geomatics technology; what’s here and now, what’s next?

Where and how is geomatics adding value and having a positive influence on the oil & gas industry?

Success stories and examples of benefits and opportunities afforded by the application of geomatics technology

Career opportunities in the field of geomatics – what’s available and what’s coming?

Please submit your presentation title and abstract to Jim Cain, at jim.cain@cain-barnes.com, for consideration. All submissions need to be received by September 1, 2013.

APSG US West Nominations

Ken Turnbull announces the nominations for the upcoming year for the APSG US West Chapter.

Dear ASPG Members;

I am pleased to announce we have members willing to step forward and accept the nominations for the upcoming year for the APSG US West Chapter.

They are:

Secretary/Treasurer - Andy Anderson

John Farrell would like to remain as Vice Chair.
Bill Emison would like to remain as Membership Chair.

A broad request for nominations was circulated, but this brought no volunteers. Andy and Natalie were personally contacted by me, because I thought they had the necessary credentials and experience, and both have accepted.

The nominated individuals will be presented at the July 19th meeting for approval by the membership.

Proposed Amendment to Articles of Association Being Withdrawn

The APSG Executive Committee withdraws proposed amendment to Articles of Association.

Message to the APSG membership from Barry Barrs, Chair of STAC

Re: Proposed Amendment to Articles of Association Being Withdrawn

Since the recent email announcement concerning the proposed amendment to the APSG Articles of Association, numerous emails have been received, in addition to one phone call, voicing concerns that the amendment is not specific enough as currently written. After discussing this further with a spokesperson for the group opposed to the amendment it was mutually agreed that the amendment would be withdrawn and STAC will continue to meet and work on both organizational structure changes needed to incorporate Chapters and the establishment of more specifics around the STAC. To ensure that the APSG membership are engaged in and informed of these proposed changes well in advance, the plan is to make every effort to have the proposed Articles of Association changes ready for review by the full membership approximately three months prior to the fall 2013 meeting. This will provide ample time to obtain feedback from the members for due consideration and make any additional adjustments well in advance of the fall meeting.

The time currently set aside on the agenda at the spring meeting for “Amendments to Articles of Association” will be used to engage the membership on ideas for consideration for the organizational structure changes to incorporate Chapters and put more specifics around STAC. Looking forward to seeing you all at the meeting

Dear Members & Guests,

The Association of Petroleum Surveying & Geomatics Canada Chapter is pleased to announce recent additions to the Leadership Committee. Please join us in welcoming Dean Mikkelsen (Conoco) and Matthew Tait (Worley Parsons). They join John Spreen (Paladin Positioning), Richard Andrews (Spatial Technologies), and Mark Dumka (Anadarko).

We still have an open position for the Chair. The Chair is responsible for delegating any/all tasks to members of the Leadership Committee. Besides that, the Chair typically organizes meetings and communicates with Houston APSG Leadership and other organizations. The Chair also provides leadership, helps set the Canada Chapter agenda and goals, and assists the Membership coordinator with various membership tasks.

There has been some informal interest expressed in the open position, and so we'd like to invite all interested members to submit a note to Mark Dumka (MTDumka@Shaw.ca) if you're interested. Please include a brief paragraph or two on your background, as well as why you're interested.

Mark Dumka will continue to serve as Interim Chair until the Canada Chapter Fall Meeting, at which time we hope to pass the Chair to the best candidate. We are targeting late October / early November for this meeting.

We'd also like to announce our Spring meeting June 5, 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM in Calgary, Alberta (limit 50 members), followed by a social. The Theme is generally (but not restricted to) O&G Spatial Data Management. We are still working on various details. We have presentations that warrant an afternoon but not a whole day. That could change based on presenters who step forward, so we are keeping the Call for Presentations open until May 14. At that time we will provide an Agenda and other meeting details. Please let us know if we are overlooking a major conflict on June 5. Please submit a note to Mark Dumka (MTDumka@Shaw.ca) if you're interested in making a presentation.

Dear Members & Guests,

It’s April and that means that our annual APSG Spring Meeting is just around the corner! This spring we’re getting back to basics by focusing on how we got where we are today in geodesy and why it matters greatly to every one of us. Plan now to join us on Friday, May 10, for a valuable and much anticipated series of presentations by industry experts from around the world on the topic of “Getting Back to Our Geodetic Roots.”

This spring’s meeting features six outstanding talks that will examine and explain the full historic impact of geodesy in chronological sequence up to and including our present “reality”. Have you ever asked the following fundamental questions?

Why I am not working in just WGS 84?
How and why were datums and map projections created?
Why are there so many geodetic datums?
Where does height figure in all this?
What and why is the geoid important?
How were measurements made before satellite technologies?

Many historic events do influence today’s handling of geodetic data in our business so it’s instructive to reflect on that history and understand how to correctly evaluate and integrate historical data with our current day spatial data. Come to the spring meeting and get the answers to all of these questions and more.

The Executive Committee makes the following resolution of changes to the Articles of Association available for review by the members of the APSG 30+ days in advance of the APSG Spring Meeting:

Add this item to Article 5 - Governing, Section 1 Executive Committee

D. The Executive Committee shall maintain a Strategic & Technical Advisory Council for organizational strategy and oversight. The Strategic & Technical Advisory Council will evaluate and advise the APSG Executive Committee with direction and initiatives that should be considered by APSG.

The Executive Committee wanted the STAC to be formally recognized in order that they may begin the work necessary to address changes to the organization structure of the APSG.

GeoGathering will take place in beautiful Colorado Springs at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort on August 21-22, 2013. This year’s theme, Developing a Data Strategy: Data Collection and Sharing, focuses on the need for efficient and effective strategies around data collection and integrity, sharing, management, analysis, and accessibility…all topics into which rigorous geodetic policies and application need to be interjected to enhance operational safety and effective decision making. The APSG Canada Chapter is looking for members to join the Leadership Committee
and is considering a Spring Meeting.

Dear Members,

The Association of Petroleum Surveying & Geomatics Canada Chapter is looking for members to join the Leadership Committee. We have open positions including Chair. Mark Dumka will serve as Interim Chair on a temporary basis. Roman Abdoullaev and Sean Callaghan are no longer with the Leadership Committee.

The Canada Chapter is also considering a Spring meeting in the May - June time frame. We have an open Call for Papers and are looking for presenters. We are also looking for sponsors for an after meeting social. We'll decide March 29 if we have enough participation to hold a Spring meeting.

Dear Members,

Greetings! I hope your 2013 is off to a great start. The APSG is certainly looking forward to an active 2013 and I want to draw your attention to some upcoming activities in which I hope you can find time to participate. As always, the success of all our events depends on your contribution, promotion, and support.

APSG Participation in ESRI PUG
The ESRI Petroleum Users Group meeting will be held in Houston this year on May 7-9. As we have for the last eight years, APSG plans to sponsor a geodetics awareness workshop. As a new initiative for the second year, APSG will facilitate and judge a map competition as part of our Education Outreach. If you are interested in contributing to the workshop presentations please contact our Education Chair, Ashok Wadwani. We also strongly encourage each of you to consider delivering a presentation at the conference outside of the workshop track, but under the APSG banner, to further educate on and promote geodetic awareness, knowledge, and best practices. This is a great venue for reaching geospatial data users and decision makers across in our adjacent disciplines and areas of expertise. Note that the drop-dead deadline for abstract submissions is February 8 so don’t delay!

APSG 29 Spring Meeting
We will hold our APSG spring meeting on Friday, May 10, at the Chevron auditorium in downtown Houston. The meeting theme is “Getting Back to Our Geodetic Roots”. If you are interested in delivering a 30 to 40 minute presentation relevant to this foundational topic then please contact Jim Cain. Abstract submissions will be accepted until April 10, 2013. Our key note speaker will be Roger Lott, a well-respected geodesy leader in our industry

APSG 30 Fall Meeting
The fall meeting of the APSG will take place on Wednesday, September 25, 2013. The venue and theme for this meeting are not yet finalized, but both will be unveiled soon.

Applied Mapping Seminar
It’s coming back! Plans are underway to offer the popular Applied Mapping Seminar on Thursday, September 26, 2013, for mappers, geotechs, land techs, data loaders, data managers…and anyone else that works with geospatial data. Seminar details will be provided on the APSG website soon.

Community Awareness and Education Opportunities
The APSG has been asked to provide presenters at various college and university campuses and GIS Day activities in Texas and Oklahoma in 2013. This is an outstanding opportunity for us to reach beyond our local venues and our petroleum-centric base to expose the next generation of mappers and spatial data managers and manipulators to the importance and immeasurable value of possessing a sound understanding of fundamental geodesy and geodetic principles. Contact our Education Chair, Ashok Wadwani, if you can assist with one of these opportunities. This will build on our recent successful outreach through Houston Area GIS day and the PPDM Winter Seminar in Houston.

We are also working with the Geological Society of America to support them at their 125th annual conference in Denver. If you are interested in attending or presenting, please contact Ashok Wadwani.

APSG Status Report
More details will be given at APSG 29 meeting hosted by Chevron in the Fall. Here is the summary:

425 total members, of which
- 22 are life time
- 33 are full time students
- 193 are past due for 2013 subscriptions, so please help APSG by paying right away
Chapters are operating in Houston, Denver, and Calgary
Chapters are in planning in Kuala Lumpur, Europe, Australia, and Middle East
Retained acronym of APSG and rebranded from Americas Petroleum Survey Group to Association of Petroleum Surveying and Geomatics
Our education program continues to be our core competency and “silverware”

We are all about elevating awareness, educating, and promoting implementation of foundational geodesy principles and practices across the many facets of the petroleum industry. As such, I want to encourage each of you to create opportunities to bring friends, coworkers, or business associates to at least one of our many events in 2013 and helping them become actively involved in our mission, too. I look forward to seeing you at one or more of our events this year!
